Biogenetic schemes based on the structural relations of natural products (I89) and on laboratory analogies have served their purpose; they have frequently led to the structure of a plant constituent by short cuts and to new methods of synthesis (I99). During the last few years experiments on plants using HC-labelled precursors have provided direct evidence of biosynthetic pathways for lignin, quercetin and tricin.
