Few mothers expressed resentment of their daughters' schedules. Indeed, these mothers were themselves once middle-aged women with demands from work and children.

Yet, well into the 1990s, theorists continued to call for research using different methods to examine older families (Bengtson, Burton, & Rosenthal, 1996). This study addresses those concerns.
